HIV/AIDSPrevention and Awareness
During 2006, ICA Kenya successfully implemented an integrated HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness program in Muthetheni, funded by American Jewish World Service. A project impact study found that ICA Kenya’s Voluntarily Counseling and Testing and HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns led to change of risk behaviors and reduction in new infection rates, from 14% to between 5.9% and 6.1%, as well as a decrease in deaths from 10 to 3 per month within the program implementation period.
Sustainable Agriculture
ICA Kenya operates a grassroots partnership program in Isinya, within the Kajiado District. The three-year program, initiated in 2006, is now operational in 12 villages and equips the local Maasai people with skills and knowledge regarding sustainable agriculture. The program is funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency and implemented cooperatively with ICA Japan.
Community Health
ICA Kenya is involved in a variety of national initiatives to improve community healthcare. In May 2006, for example, ICA Kenya hosted a national training program in Nairobi on “Community Health Prevention,” which included Public Health Officers from the Ministry of Health, representing eight Kenyan provinces. Training was facilitated by Edward Mutiso of ICA Kenya, together with Jim Wiegel and Louise Singleton from the United States, and Gerald Gomani from ICA Zimbabwe.
