The ICA Global Conference on Human Development

Since 1984, ICA International has hosted eight international conferences concerned with the human factor in development and re-emergence of civil society. These conferences have been highly participatory and focused on practical sharing of approaches that work. Interchange, dialogue and designing creative responses to particular areas of concern in society are the aims of ICA conferences.

  • 2012: Unleashing and Promoting Human Capacity for Sustainable Development – Kathmandu, Nepal
  • 2008: Unlocking the Potential to Create a New World Together – Atami, Japan
  • 2004: Weaving a New Society – Antigua, Guatemala
  • 2000: Millennium Connection – Denver CO, USA
  • 1996: The Rise of Civil Society in 21st Century – Cairo, Egypt
  • 1992: Exploring the Great Transition – Prague, Czech Republic
  • 1988: Our Common Future – Oaxtapec, Mexico
  • 1984: International Exposition of Rural Development – New Delhi, India

Since 2015 we have been exploring prospects for partnership with Initiatives of Change (IofC) for our next global conference, perhaps at IofC Caux in Switzerland in 2017 or 2018.  In the meantime we will continue to develop our programme of regional gatherings and conferences in 2016 – to expand and deepen relationships among ICAs, and between ICA and IofC, in the regions.

The six themes of the 8th Global Conference on Human Development in Kathmandu in 2012 were:

  1. Growing a New Sense of Leadership
  2. Reshaping Education forthe 21st Century
  3. Promoting Peace Building and Good Governance
  4. Building a Viable Future for Planet Earth
  5. Building Strategies for Comprehensive Development
  6. Resourcing Human Development

Conference reports may be found in Winds & Waves, December 2012, and at TechNetNepal.

The book Changing Lives Changing Societies: ICA’s experience in Nepal and in the world was published in conjunction with the 2012 conference.
